Bright ideas

- With Sharon Dale

A fridge or fridge freezer can happily run for an average of 15 years from new.

The only issue is that during that time colour trends will change several times, at least.

Fortunately, your fridge can follow suit thanks to paint. Yes, you can paint it and domestic appliance expert Marks Electrical has put together some tips.

For others, visit Instagram where you can see a host of before and after photographs.

Marks reckons it costs £40 to paint the average fridge.

■ Remove the handles, unplug the fridge and pull it out into the middle of the room so it’s easier to work with. Be sure to close the doors.

■ Next, sand over the fridge with a 120grit sandpaper and give it a thorough clean to remove any stains, grease or grime, and leave the fridge to air dry.

■ Use a magnetic primer as a base and ensure the room is well ventilated. Cover in two coats. The Paint Shed recommends using Zinsser 123 primer.

■ Now paint the fridge in two coats using chalkboard paint and in between coats, go outside to spray paint the fridge handles in your colour of choice. This is safer than doing it in the house due to the level of fumes.

■ Let the paint dry, put the fridge back and plug it in.
