Games CHESS
YORKSHIRE CHESS ASSOCIATION
The Yorkshire leagues concluded on St George’s Day. York’s celebrations of winning the Woodhouse were slightly dampened as they lost to perennial rivals Sheffield, but this only allowed Sheffield to cement fourth place behind Leeds and Calderdale. Heavy defeats for
York B and Huddersfield meant that they occupy the two relegation spots with Harrogate A surviving.
Rose Forgrove defeated York C to complete their perfect season in winning the IM Brown. The battle for the second promotion spot proved to be very hard-fought. Alwoodley A could “only” defeat Harrogate B 4.5-3.5, while Wakefield hosted Hull DCA B and managed to score a crucial 6.5-1.5 win. Both teams finished on 8 match points, but Wakefield’s big win saw them overtake Alwoodley by half a board point to finish in second.
At the other end, West Leeds and York C finished in the bottom two spots.
