A corner of yorkshire JB PRIESTLEY STATUE, BRADFORD

-

The statue of JB Priestley stands overlooking Prince’s Way, with the National Media Museum behind him, in the centre of Bradford.

Since this position can sometimes be a little more than breezy, the author and playwright’s cloak flutters out behind him.

Here we have sculptor Ian Judd’s striking memorial to one of the county’s most remarkable sons.

On it is a plaque featuring lines from his book Bright Day: “Lost in its smoky valley among the Pennine hills, bristling with tall mill chimneys, Bruddersfield is generally held to be an ugly city; and so I suppose that it is, but it always seemed to me to have the kind of ugliness that could not only be tolerated but often enjoyed; it was grim, but not mean.” For “Bruddersfield”, read “Bradford”.

The bronze (more than life-size) monument was unveiled in 1986 by Jacquetta Hawkes, Priestley’s widow and his third wife.
