Interior designer Ann Marie Cousins of Ilkley-based AMC designs reveals how to use wallpaper for best effect:

■ Knowledge of the colour wheel can help you understand the do’s and don’ts of colour pairing. Don’t be afraid to go bold. One way is to choose colours that sit opposite each other on the wheel, such as violet and yellow or orange and blue.

■ While it is important to choose the right colour and pattern to tie into your design scheme, adding a wallpaper with texture and depth will add texture and warmth to a space. This is ideal for a snug or bedroom.

■ If you want to use wallpaper but aren’t sure how, start with smaller rooms like a downstairs bathroom or utility. This is more affordable and allows you to experiment. Choose a wallpaper that packs a punch and remember that larger patterns give the illusion of space.

■ Patterns and colours can affect the emotions so think about how you use a room and what you require from it. In a bedroom darker tones are a popular choice for promoting relaxation and helping your switch off. In a living room or playroom, opt for an interesting design or colourful mural to create a sense of vibrancy.
