This bleak drama is best known for being the final film of Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, but there’s an awful lot more to it than that. For a start, if you’ve only ever seen them in their frothy comedies, then you’re going to be in for a shock – both of them deliver strong dramatic performances, and you wonder what else they could have achieved had they not suffered premature deaths. She plays a divorcee who enters into a troubled romance with his ageing cowboy. The screenplay was by Monroe’s estranged husband, Arthur Miller.
