YORKSHIRE CHESS ASSOCIATION

The fourth weekend of the over-the-board 4NCL took place over May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

In the combined Divisions 1 and 2, Chessable White Rose 1 won their first two games, despatching Sussex Martlets 1 and their second team. They faced a stiffer challenge against leaders Chess.com Manx Liberty. The Isle of Man outfit were led to a 5-3 victory from the front by the legendary GM Alexei Shirov who defeated GM Gawain Jones in tactical style (see today’s puzzle). The second team lost both their fulfilled fixtures but have made a good start in their partially-played fixtures.

For the two Bradford teams in Division 3 North, this was their final weekend of action. The A team defeated White Rose 3 but lost against Manchester Manticores 2 and Hull & East Tigers to finish in the bottom half. Their B team also struggled losing all three fixtures and propping up the table.
