BRIGHT IDEAS

All hail Annie for her brave colour ideas

- By Sharon Dale

ANNIE Sloan invented her revolutionary, trade marked furniture paint, Chalk Paint, in 1990 and hasn’t stopped refining and improving her formula since. She is now widely considered a leading authority on paint, colour and style.

Earlier this year, Annie was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to interior design and it’s clear why. She made painting fun and ecofriendly and she dared us to be brave with colour combinations.

Then came the books, all excellent and on my bookshelf, and the chalk painting courses, which were and still are lots of fun and very informative.

Her first book, The Complete Book of Decorative Paint Techniques, was published in 1988 and she has since published another 25 books on paint effects, colour and interior design. The invention of her Chalk Paint resulted from Annie’s need for a paint that could be used to achieve endless decorative effects and quickly. Chalk Paint satisfied that brief as it can be applied to wood, glass, metal, brick and even laminate, left to dry, and then waxed within one day.

In 2021, Annie introduced her Wall Paint. Following years of research, extensive trials and independent testing she has perfected the formula. It combines premium pigments with Annie’s in-depth knowledge of the history of interiors and has the practicality of an easy to use, durable, wipe-clean, finish. The picture exemplifies her work and her brilliant colour combos. The Annie Sloan satin paint on the woodwork is Knightsbridge Green and the walls are in Piranesi Pink. www.anniesloan.com
