MY FIRST CAR
Lynn Dunning
Lynn Dunning’s first car was an
Austin Metro which was vital to get her to and from her first job in
Yorkshire.
“I was living in Thorpe Hesley and working at Cannon Hall near Barnsley,” she said.
“It was a nightmare to get to but my mum helped me out and I had her car.
“I loved it. It was a great little car. I loved it. “I do remember having to pick up some ceramics to take to Cannon Hall in the Metro which was an interesting journey.
“It did break down once. I was driving to Cannon Hall and the suspension went as I came off the M1. As I drove into the car park it was lopsided and everyone at the museum came out to see what had happened.”
The upshot was the car was scrapped and she had to get another, which was a Volkswagen Polo from a dealership in Barnsley.
Lynn, who is the new head of the National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield, was until recently head of museums at Barnsley. She says she was late to driving. “I was a student in Edinburgh so I didn’t really need a car there. I think I was 29 before I started driving regularly.”
She now lives in Wakefield and drives a Land Rover Discovery, which she loves. And she did have a Land Rover Freelander before that.
But she did drive an unusual sports car. “After my husband died I bought a Volkswagen Eos, which wasn’t the most sensible thing to get when I had a young child and a dog,” she said.
“I enjoyed the car but it wasn’t very practical. “I am considering buying a more environmentally friendly car next time. Maybe an electric vehicle or a hybrid.”
