MY FIRST CAR

- By Steve Teale Liz Wood

Liz Wood of the West and North Yorkshire Chamber was almost driven to tears in one of her outings in her first car.

It was a Ford Fiesta and she took her friends to Leeds for a night out to Mr Craig’s nightclub when she became confused by the complicated road system in the city centre which drove her to distraction..

“On the way back I got stuck on a loop,” she said. “I was driving round in circles and I went past the same police car three times. I was almost in tears.

“The police officer pulled me up and asked where I was trying to get to.

“I said Bradford and he said ‘follow me’. He very kindly put me on the right road.

“I would have still been there now if he hadn’t helped me. I’ll never forget that night, it was such a strange incident, and I’m so grateful to the policeman.”

Liz, who is head of membership at the Chamber, said she borrowed £600 to buy the car. She was working in accounts at the chamber at the time and said it was great to be on the road.

Since the amalgamation of several chambers she now operates between Leeds, Bradford and York and enjoys driving.

“I’m quite happy driving,” she said. “I did like the Fiesta because it had a red go-faster stripe on it but it had faded to pink.

“I now have a Vauxhall Corsa Sport which I love. I do quite a lot of driving and I’m happy on the road. I do quite a lot of driving around

Yorkshire and I love it. My dream car was always a Ford Capri and I had a thing about Lotus Elise. I don’t know why, I just love the shape and the look of the cars.

“Recently I went on chamber business to Grantley Hall (a hotel near Ripon) and there were some beautiful cars there.

"My little Corsa didn’t really fit in! It looked out of place but I love it.”
