MY FIRST CAR

- By Steve Teale Angus Ashworth

Television auctioneer Angus Ashworth first took to the road with a scooter when he was 16 but he has a great fondness for his first car, a Mini Mayfair which dates from 1985.

“I must have been 18 when I got it,” he said. “I enjoyed the scooter but it was great to have a car and to be properly mobile, not to have to rely on other people for lifts.

“I remember going through a puddle with it and flooding the engine, which wasn’t a clever thing to do.

“I was a teenager and it was great to learn about cars a little and how to keep them going.”

He now has a combo van which he admits is not a glamorous vehicle but it is perfect for his job as an auctioneer at Ryedale Auctioneers in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire.

Angus says: “I can gets lots of stuff in it which is a prerequisite for me with my job.

“I don’t really desire a grand car. The van is perfect for me and I love driving it.

“Space is paramount for me. The more stuff I can get in, the better.”

Angus is now a familiar face on television with his programme The Yorkshire Auction House on the Really channel. He has also appeared on BBC’s Antiques Road Trip.

Among the people he helps de-clutter are Anthea Turner, Simon Gregson, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Crissy Rock and Frazer Hines. He also meets Jenny Powell, Amanda Barrie, Tim Vincent, Dom Joly and Lizzie

Cundy. “People love the show,” he said. “it’s something everyone has to go through, selling items on after clearing a house for example.

“And the fact that these are famous names just makes it a little more special. I love doing the show.”

Angus, who was brought up in Retford in Nottinghamshire, also hosts charity events and is an after-dinner speaker.
