MY FIRST CAR

- By Steve Teale Justine Greene

BBC radio presenter Justine Greene is a well-travelled woman but she still recalls her first car with great fondness. It was a Mini Metro which she obtained when she was 17 and she was training in theatre and dance.

“My parents bought it and it cost about £200, I think,” she said. “I covered a lot of miles in it and I loved the car. I still do a lot of miles.

“I live in Kent and my home city is Coventry. I go back a lot to see family and to watch the Coventry Blaze ice hockey team.

“I must know the route off my heart now because I do it so often. It’s 250 miles and I do it most weekends, accompanied by BBC radio of course, Eventually I had to get rid of the Metro for 101 different reasons.”

Justine is one of UK radio’s most recognisable news voices – having presented news programmes and written and read the news on BBC national radio for the past 25 years.

She delivers the latest news each week across BBC Radio 2, BBC 6Music, BBC Radio 5live and BBC World Service.

Justine is often heard reporting for BBC Radio

4 and is part of the network’s General Election specials team. She also presented the Radio 4 drama documentary The Bid. Justine is also an experienced TV presenter and reporter for BBC News.

She also travelled a lot when she was an actress and she has performed in spaces as diverse as the National Theatre and Russia’s Gorky Theatre (New Experimental Theatre) – as well as appearing in the critically acclaimed independent film The Stupid Boy.

She now drives a Volkswagen Polo. “I still do a lot of miles and the Polo is great,” she said.

“It covers the ground well and I find it a very good car to drive.

“I do enjoy driving and especially with the radio to keep me company it’s not a problem for me.”
