Gatekeepers

BBC Sounds, review by Yvette Huddleston

As Facebook reaches its 20th anniversary, journalist Jamie Bartlett hosts this compelling, sometimes chilling, eight-part series that investigates how social media has allowed a new digital elite to control what information we see online.

While the original idea was a kind of hippie dream of increasing connectedness and building a ‘global consciousness’. the reality is much less idealistic and more money-driven and political.

Bartlett asks pertinent questions about what this means for democracy and how and why social media have become the new information gatekeepers.

In the opening episode he traces the roots of the story back to San Francisco to meet one of the early pioneers of social media.
