ARTS DIARY

- By Yvette Huddleston

Crucible community projects:

To accompany Sheffield Theatres’ forthcoming production of the Arthur Miller classic The Crucible at the Crucible theatre, community members and local school pupils are involved in projects responding to the themes of the play. The new production of The Crucible opens today and runs until the end of the month. Witchcraft and female community are among the themes of the play and the modern interpretation of witchcraft provided an inspiration for creativity. Sheffield Theatres joined with local floristry business MoonKo to provide Witch/Craft Workshops. Deborah-Máire Moon, founder of MoonKo and former art teacher and lecturer, is a direct descendent of the real John Proctor. Together with creative facilitator Imogen Ashby and Simon Marshall, Sheffield Theatres’ Community Engagement Officer, an invited group of women will meet weekly at the Crucible to create dried flower garlands and displays.

Performed by renowned singer and biwa player Akiko Kubota, for whom the piece was written especially, Itō Noe: On an Endless Road celebrates the brief, inspirational life of writer and feminist anarchist Itō Noe (1895-1923), who challenged the social and patriarchal norms of the time and was an advocate for women’s rights.
