MY FIRST CAR

MC Hammersmith

- By Steve Teale

Entertainer MC Hammersmith spends a lot of time on the road so his first car, a Vauxhall Corsa, was very important to him.

The award-winning hip-hop comedian, real name Will Naameh, said he was a teenager when he passed his test but it was some years later that he got his first motor.

“I was 19 when I passed but it was about five years later that I actually started driving,” he said. “I had been at university and didn’t really need to drive.

“But then I got a job at the Edinburgh Science Festival and I had to drive to schools up and down Scotland as part of an educational programme.

“The first vehicle I actually drove properly after my test was a van. I remember I crashed it into a wall and on the Shetland Isles I drove it into the sea. It wasn’t quite as dramatic as it sounds but still not something I would want to do again.

“I drove on to a spit of land and saw cars crossing safely but our van was heavy and it began to sink. A tractor driver pulled us out and he said it happened all the time and not to worry about it.”

Will now performs improvised and scripted hip-hop comedy, and is billed as “the world’s leading freestyle rapper to ever emerge from the ghetto of middle class west London”.

Will, who is touring the UK including dates in Yorkshire, said he enjoys driving and spends a lot of time on the road.

Now based in Edinburgh, he performs across the UK and internationally.

Will, who has 100 million followers on social media, will be at Hull comedy Lounge on March 24, Sheffield Leadmill on March 31 and Leeds Wardrobe on April 18.

“I have done lots of gigs in Yorkshire and I love the audiences there,” he said. “They really get it and it makes for a good show.”
