MY FIRST CAR

- By Steve Teale David Kerfoot

ENTREPRENEUR David Kerfoot drives some pretty impressive cars these days, but he still remembers his first car with fondness, even if the colour was far from impressive.

David started out on his motoring journey in a Volkswagen Beetle. “It was a great car but the colour was a sort of brown or tan, which wasn’t great,” he said.

“But the freedom of having a car was fantastic. I got it when I went to Sheffield Polytechnic with the help of my mother and father.

“I had a couple of weekend jobs to help me pay for it, including cleaning coaches after they had taken people to the coast on a weekend, which at times was not pleasant!

“I remember there was a fad at the time for people to put a sort of black cover on the bonnet. I did it but it made the paint crack so it really wasn’t a good idea.”

David is a Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire and chairman of Scarborough Town Deal as as chair of Fixed Our Food Yorkshire and he is involved in quite a few other charities.

He has a strong background in agriculture, food production and the rural economy, having started his career with US agricultural giant Cargill before setting up the Kerfoot Group with his wife, Elizabeth.

He said he has been lucky enough to have a few nice cars over the years, including a Bentley Continental which he still has. “It has 17,000 miles on the clock and I only take it out on nice days,” he said.

Another memorable motor was a Triumph Spitfire in magenta, which he got when he was 21.

Now he has a Range Rover as his daily drive but he tends to be happiest in a Land Rover Defender. “I can put the dogs in and off we go,” he said.

“It is a great workhorse. I just love being in it.”
