£10,000 goal as pair of Cup Final medals under hammer

-

A PAIR of nine carat gold FA Cup final medals presented to two Yorkshire footballers is set to fetch up to £10,000 when they are auctioned within minutes of each other at the same sale.

The 1968 FA Cup winner’s medal presented to Leeds-born West Bromwich Albion star, Clive “Chippy “Clark is expected to sell for between £7,000 and £8,000 at Graham Budd Auctions in London on Thursday.

Then, only minutes later, the 1973 FA Cup runner-up medal presented to Leeds United striker Allan “Sniffer” Clarke is set to fetch between £2,000 and £2,500.

Clarke scored 110 goals in 273 Football League appearances for Leeds United and was an England striker in the 1970s.

Now sixty seven, he lives in Scunthorpe.

Clive Clark was born at Roundhay in Leeds in December 1940 and played for Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers and then West Bromwich Albion, where he enjoyed his greatest success, helping the West Midlands club reach three major cup finals in consecutive years.

His friend and former West Bromwich Albion team mate, Tony Brown, said: “Chippy was such a great lad and a really terrific player.

“He had speed and skill and was brave as a lion because he was small and defenders used to kick him all over the place, but he never shied away from any of it.

“You could always rely on him for ten or fifteen goals a season.

“There is no one around today who plays like Chippy.

“He was an old fashioned winger who would stay on the wing and get crosses in and the team we played that was crucial as Jeff Astle would either head the crosses in or knock them down for me.

“I dread to think what Chippy would be worth today.

“You couldn’t put a price on him.”
