Illuminated cyclists dazzle a 3,000 crowd to mark Le Tour

-

A MESMERISING cycling light show fusing dance, sport and art has wowed more than 3,000 people on its opening night.

The Ghost Peloton spectacle at the former Tetley Brewery’s Waides Yard, in Leeds, saw 30 illuminated cyclists wearing special light suits ride in unison to a projected film featuring dancers and a BMX stunt rider.

A collaboration between Leeds-based Phoenix Dance Theatre and arts organisation NVA with transport charity Sustrans, the show is among the Yorkshire Festival 2014 events.

Last night’s evening show was the first of two free-ticketed performances – the second scheduled for the same venue tonight – aimed to help mark the upcoming arrival of the Tour de France on July 5 and 6.

A striking mechanical countdown clock was also unveiled at the Trinity Leeds shopping centre yesterday. The clock was created by Leeds-based designer Barney George.

ITV’s Emmerdale has also announced its plans to celebrate the Grand Départ. Olympic golden girl Victoria Pendleton will appear in the soap as the celebrity guest to reopen Home Farm. Show bosses have promised that “a few interesting cyclists pass through the village”.
