TV LEGENDS: THE WAY THEY WERE

Unseen pictures of stars who graced our screens

NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN PHOTOGRAPH­S of screen stars including Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Michael Caine, Sir Bruce Forsyth and Joanna Lumley are to feature in a TV Times exhibition.

To celebrate the magazine’s 60th anniversar­y, the images – part of the 60 Years, 60 Iconic Images exhibition – are a blast from the past.

The portraits show Dame Helen, best known for portraying the Queen, shimmering in a golden gown in 2005 after being voted all-time favourite actress as part of the 50th anniversar­y celebratio­ns, Sir Bruce in 1967 during his time on ITV’s variety programme The Bruce Forsyth Show – while the Downton Abbey star Dame Maggie Smith is photograph­ed on a beach.

Stephanie Beacham shows off her puppy love for her Cavalier King Charles spaniels Amoreena – a gift from film director Michael Winner and actor Marlon Brando, following their collaborat­ion on The Nightcomer­s – and Minnie in the 1974 snapshot.

James Bond star Sir Roger Moore is also seen enjoying a rest between filming scenes of The Saint, in which he plays Simon Templar.

A second exhibition, Interplay, will feature photograph­s of music stars from the 1960s through to the 1980s, featuring image of some of the biggest names in music including The Beatles, Kate Bush and The Doors.

Other famous names featured in the 60 years 60 Iconic Images exhibition include Manchester United football legend George Best, boxing great Muhammad Ali, comedian Ronnie Barker and also the singer and actress Liza Minelli.

The exhibition, in associatio­n with the Merge Festival, is open to the public from tomorrow until October 18. It is being held at the Blue Fin Building and Platform, Southwark, in London.

Admission is free and TV Times has put together an audio guide giving background to each of the 60 images in the exhibition.
