Dripping blood in cathedral – all in the name of modern art
AS ART goes, the latest piece to be shown in a cathedral might cause a stir.
Sheffield Cathedral is hosting pieces by artists including the Cyber Iconic Man which is hanging from the ceiling in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
It is designed to reflect on genetic engineering, stem cell research and the transformation of the body by plastic surgery and metal prostheses.
Shockingly, blood drips from parts of the body to the mouth and onto the floor.
The art is part of five exhibitions, called Going Public: International Art Collectors, at the Cathedral, Millennium Gallery, Graves Gallery, Site Gallery and Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, and is designed to begin a debate about ‘the role public galleries and private collections play in bringing great art to everyone’.
Councillor Isobel Bowler, Cabinet Minister for Neighbourhoods, Sheffield City Council said: “Going Public represents a vital opportunity to explore how the regions can develop meaningful partnerships between the arts, business and philanthropists. It’s great to see these remarkable exhibitions frame a national debate and clearly demonstrate the city’s commitment to artistic excellence and innovation.”
Other work will include a sound installation in the lower level of the crypt.
