Odeliz bows out on high note with win in Italy

- TOM RICHMOND

KARL BURKE has paid tribute to the “wonderfully talented” Odeliz after the mare signed off in style with a second Group One of the season in the Premio Longines Lydia Tesio at Capannelle racecourse in Italy.

Successful in the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville in August, the tough five-year-old added to her top-level gains with a neck defeat of Sound Of Freedom under Adrie de Vries.

Odeliz is likely to have run her last race as she is booked to appear at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale before beginning a stud career.

Leyburn-based Burke said: “If we get the price we expect of her at the sales she will go to the paddocks. It’s been a fantastic journey.”

Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Coneygree is among 14 entries for the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase at Carlisle on Sunday.

The Mark Bradstock-trained eight-year-old is qualified for this race as he is a second-season chaser having won the Gold Cup as a novice last term.

Today’s memorial service for Sir Peter O’Sullevan, the ‘Voice of Racing’ precedes a race at Nottingham tomorrow which will be staged in memory of the legendary commentator, who died earlier this year at the age of 97.

The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Voice of Racing EBF Maiden Stakes also marks the 30th anniversary of 11-times champion jockey Lester Piggott retiring from British racing for the first time, with Sir Peter among the 6,000-strong crowd who watched the maestro win aboard Full Choke.

Middleham jockey Henry Brooke moved onto the 19-winner mark for the current campaign, one short of his tally in the whole of the 201415 season, when Monbeg River prevailed at Ayr yesterday.
