Tributes paid to ‘reclusive’ brothers killed together

-

NEIGHBOURS ON a Sheffield street where two elderly brothers were killed in mysterious circumstances have paid tribute to the ‘pleasant, but reclusive’ men.

Brothers Raymond and Arthur Sharkey, aged 77 and 79, were walking arm-in-arm when they were struck by a blue Audi A4 ‘carrying out a manoeuvre’ on Glenorchy Road, Nether Edge.

Neighbour Thelma Johnson said: “In some ways it’s a blessing they have died together – I honestly don’t know how one would have survived without the other. They were always together.”

She added: “They were both very withdrawn, but I used to see them every day walking around together.

“Both brothers were very infirm and they would hold onto each other, taking very small steps. It’s so awful how they died and such a shock. It’s very strange circumstances too.”

The brothers, who lived together on Glenorchy Road, suffered serious head injuries in the collision and were taken to hospital in a critical condition and both died weeks later.

Neighbour Mohammed Ayub said he saw the brothers lying in the road in the aftermath of the incident.

Raymond died of his injuries on June 17 and Arthur died on July 18. South Yorkshire Police have made a renewed appeal for information about the crash.

Anyone with information about the accident, at around 2.25pm on June 2 can call 101, quoting incident 538 of June 2.
