MP meets volunteers charting football club’s 130-year history
A YORKSHIRE MP has supported the National Citizens Service (NCS) visiting 30 teenagers who are taking part in a project to help a football club mark its 130th anniversary.
The NCS is a two-week programme during the school holidays which helps 16 and 17-yearolds to expand their horizons while learning life skills.
Michael Dugher, the MP for Barnsley East, visited 30 teenagers at the town’s Oakwell Stadium.
During his visit, young people presented their social action project to create a timeline of Barnsley FC to commemorate 130 years of the club’s history.
Teenagers were invited down to Barnsley FC’s training ground to interview old and current players, and are now planning the design of the timeline that will be put in the club’s concourse for fans to enjoy.
Michael Dugher, said: “I first visited National Citizen Service participants in 2015 and saw the impact of their social action in the constituency I represent in Barnsley.
“This government flagship programme enables young people to not only take part in outdoor activities and meet new people but also to give something back to their communities, so I am delighted to once again be able to support NCS this summer, and hope to visit many more in the future.”
Callum Whitehead, 16 from Barnsley, was in the group that met Mr Dugher.
He said: “It was great to meet Mr Dugher on NCS, his visit makes me realise what a great opportunity the programme is, and it was fantastic for him to take time out of his busy schedule to support the hard work we are all doing.
“I’ve made so many new friends already, and we’re working so hard on the project.
“It was great to be invited down to the first team training ground to interview players and take photos of the timeline. I’ll never forget my time here, and I’m already thinking of how to include this on my CV.”
