Men taken to hospital after two gun attacks

-

POLICE WERE last night investigating after a double shooting in Leeds.

Officers confirmed one man was found at 11.20pm on Sunday with a gunshot wound near The Reginald Centre in Chapeltown Road, Chapeltown.

The 19-year-old man was taken to hospital by the officers and underwent surgery to remove a bullet from his neck. He was yesterday in hospital in a stable condition. Inquiries established the man had been shot at a nearby parade of shops.

Then just over 90 minutes later at about 12.55am yesterday, officers received a report of a shooting at the Nitetrax nightclub in Chapeltown Road. Police said a 42-year-old man had received a gunshot injury. He was taken to hospital by ambulance and was in a stable condition later yesterday.

A 20-year-old woman also received a minor cut to her leg during the incident and was taken to hospital by officers for treatment. Both scenes have been examined by forensics teams, which meant Chapeltown Road was closed from Grange Avenue to Harehills Avenue.

However, the road has reopened in time for the start of yesterday’s Leeds West Indian Carnival parade. Police said they had liaised with the council and the carnival organisers to ensure any disruption to the event was kept to a minimum.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Swift said: “There is nothing at this stage to suggest these incidents are linked and we are carrying out extensive inquiries into both. Clearly the criminal use of firearms resulting in people being injured is always a cause for serious concern and we will continue to do everything we can to trace those responsible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call West Yorkshire Police on the non-emergency number of 101.
