Summer filled with activities at children’s hospices across region

-

THE BRITISH weather may have been unreliable, but that has not stopped youngsters at Yorkshire’s three children’s hospices enjoying the summer.

For families whose children have complex needs and long journeys and breaks are difficult, a stay at the hospices, The Yorkshire Post’s charity of the year, is as good as a holiday.

At Martin House, Boston Spa, young people have also returned from a five-day trip to the Calvert Trust in Kielder. Set in 40 acres of woodland, it is one of six specialist centres offering breaks for young people with disabilities. Back at the hospice, families have made the most of a revamped outdoor play with a wheelchair swing and roundabout, an activity centre with a slide and sand pit, trampolines, and a water play station.

At Bluebell Wood, in Sheffield, children have enjoyed activities including a circus week and a summer fun spectacular.

Activity co-ordinator Catherine Holland said: “We’re all about living with love and laughter here at Bluebell Wood.”

The appeal aims to raise £30,000 as the hospices, which also include Forget Me Not in Huddersfield, need to raise more than £13m each year as only 10 per cent of funding comes from the Government.
