Guiseley battle but are sunk by solitary Rovers goal

- NATIONAL LEAGUE

GUISELEY suffered their seventh loss in a row, going down 1-0 at promotion favourites Tranmere Rovers despite a defiant display.

Tranmere took the lead just before half-time when James Norwood was found in the area and, on the angle, produced a smart finish which left Dan Atkinson helpless.

Guiseley tried hard to initiate some attacks after the interval, but Rovers’ defence coped well.

The visitors had a decent chance when Javan Vidal controlled a pass well only to see his effort saved well by Scott Davies. Gary Mills, facing York

City for the first time since his dismissal in 2013, guided Wrexham to a 2-1 win over the Minstermen.

Maximum points were earned with goals from John Rooney and Sean Newton either side of Richard Brodie’s equaliser.

The hosts took a 17th-minute lead when Matt Fry tripped Paul Rutherford and Rooney beat Kyle Letheren from the spot.

The Minstermen drew level within seven minutes as Brodie grabbed his fourth goal in as many games.

Wrexham regained the lead through Newton on 63 minutes and York could not summon a second comeback with weak late efforts from substitutes Scott Fenwick and Clovis Kamdjo missing the target.

North Ferriby United lost their unbeaten home record to a stoppage-time goal from Barrow AFC substitute Richard Bennett.

Ferriby manager Steve Housham commented: “I was proud of their performance because they gave everything. It was probably our best so far and it hurts to get no reward.

“The fitness levels were great, especially after the long trip to Aldershot. We’d emphasised Barrow’s strengths from set-pieces and defended them well until being undone right at the end.” FC Halifax Town manager Billy Heath admitted the best team won after his side went down 1-0 at home to Harrogate.

Jack Emmett’s second-half goal condemned The Shaymen to their second defeat in three days after they lost 3-2 at AFC Fylde on Saturday.

Heath said: “There’s too many square pegs in round holes; we’re thin on the ground. We lose Josh Wilde at half-time and we have to stick Kevin Roberts on the left and put Jake Hibbs at right-back.

“We’ve already got Scott Garner playing in central-midfield to start with.”

Leaders Fylde were 4-1 winners at Bradford Park Avenue for whom a strike from Chris Sharp strike was in vain
