Monday: Harrison & Hetheringt­on Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their opening prize show and Sale of Store Cattle for 2017, where a catalogued entry of 586 cattle were on offer. Topping the sale at £1505 was a 16 month old Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside, which was bought by Messrs Cooper, Troughton Hall, Broughton In Furness. The pre sale show which was kindly sponsored by I’Ansons of Masham saw an outstandin­g turnout of cattle put in front of our judge Mr Walter Dandie who travelled the distance from Broxburn, West Lothian. Mr Dandie awarded the Championsh­ip to a 16 month old Limousin cross steer consigned by Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, with Mr Dandie backing his judgment by buying the steer for £1500. Messrs Sowerby’s consignmen­t of 20 steer and heifers averaged a wonderful £1367.33. The Reserve Championsh­ip was taken by a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Pedley, Oaktree Farm, Barbon, with the 13 month old steer selling for £1355 to Mr Barnett, Shap. Topping the sale at £1318.10 was a eight year old cast Limousin Bull from Messrs Atkinson, Waitby Farm, which was bought by Mr David Barker. Topping at 173.5p/ kg was a Limousin cross cow from Messrs Pedley, Oaktree Farm, which was bought by Mr Alan Jarvis. All classes of cast and OTM were an excellent trade for all types, being the dearest seen for some time!
