Opening day loss was never a concern for Monk

WHEN THE final whistle blew at Loftus Road on the opening weekend of the season, Leeds United looked to be in for a long season.

Outplayed comprehensively by Queens Park Rangers, the Yorkshire club’s players were abused by the travelling supporters in the wake of that sorry 3-0 defeat.

Following on from five seasons of largely mediocre football in the Championship, little seemed to have changed – hence the negative reaction from the stands.

Fast forward to the return match tomorrow against QPR, however, and things are very different. Not only are Leeds sitting fourth in the table and firmly on course for a tilt at the play-offs but the feel-good factor is well and truly back at Elland Road with those jeers of August having long since given way to cheers.

“We have an opportunity against QPR to show just how far we have come in terms of that first game,” said Monk. “We were disappointed at the time, especially as we knew we were better than that.

“That is our motivation. Everyone realises the improvements we have made and what we are trying to build.

“To be fair, I knew on a daily basis from training that we were working in the right way.

“The players were taking on board what we were saying and getting used to our ways of doing things. The squad was also being finalised. They are not excuses, but they did contribute.”

Monk, meanwhile, has reiterated his desire not to be sidetracked by talk of a new contract despite his current deal only running until the summer.

Andrea Radrizzani – on buying a 50 per cent in the Championship club earlier this year – spoke of the need to tie down the 38-year-old but, as yet, no talks have taken place.

“I am not going to talk about that situation,” said Monk when asked about a possible contract extension. “I think it is selfish if I talk about myself.

“Right now is about these players, this football club and them trying to win games. That is the only bit that matters.

“You guys (in the media), I will tell you first if there is any news on that side. But that will, obviously, be when I have sat down and spoken to the club.”
