Heartbreak as ‘amazing’ mother loses brave fight against cancer
A MOTHER-OF-FOUR from Yorkshire who travelled to Germany to undergo cancer treatment has lost her battle with the disease.
Sally Major had been diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer in May 2015 and underwent emergency surgery, 20 cycles of chemotherapy and other selffunded treatment in the UK.
The 33-year-old’s final hope was a programme of treatment at the Hallwang Clinic in Germany, which uses immunotherapy drugs not available on the NHS.
On Saturday, her husband broke the news of her death to the family’s supporters via a Facebook page sharing their story.
Liam Major wrote: “It breaks my heart a little bit more than it already is saying this, but my amazing, gorgeous, courageous wife Sally Jayne drifted away to a better and more peaceful place last night.
“Never have I met before or will I meet again anyone so amazing, my soulmate, penguin, the absolute love of my life, and the perfect mum to our beautiful and strong kids. She’ll live in them forever.”
He also praised medics at the clinic for all their efforts, saying the treatment was working but his wife’s kidneys had failed.
The family had remortgaged their home in Silsden, near Keighley, and sold their car to raise funds for her care.
But it was only through the support of thousands of wellwishers – who donated more than £70,000 – that the treatment could continue when the family’s money ran out last month.
The couple’s young children had been urged by doctors to say goodbye to their mother last week, despite signs that the treatment was beginning to work.
Hundreds of people have shared messages of condolence since Mrs Major passed away.
Margarita Smith wrote: “This brave, brave lady endured so much to remain with her family. Her courage will be one of the lasting legacies she will leave for her family.”
Sheila Brown said: “RIP. Your husband has your four beautiful children as your memory.”
