Supermarket plans for former headquarters of Bradford & Bingley
PLANS HAVE been unveiled for a new supermarket on land where the former Bradford & Bingley Building Society headquarters once stood.
Lidl has drafted multi-million pound proposals for a new 2,470 sq m store on the vacant site off Main Street, Bingley, which will create up to 40 new jobs.
The German supermarket has appointed national planning and development consultancy Lichfields to take forward the proposal on its behalf.
The proposals were shown at a public exhibition in the town last week.
Jonathan Wallace, senior director at Lichfields, said: “The proposed site has stood vacant for a number of years creating a negative impact on the town centre.
“A state-of-the-art, new Lidl store, which would provide a spacious and attractive shopping environment for the residents of Bingley, will bring the site back into active use increasing the vitality and viability of the town centre.
“The new proposals, which will also generate additional spin-off trade for the existing shops in Bingley town centre, were wellreceived at Tuesday’s consultation event.”
Lidl plans to create 127 free car parking spaces for Lidl customers, including six disabled spaces, and seven parent and toddler spaces. The development will lead to the upgrade of the Main Street and Myrtle Place junction and create a new pedestrian link into the site from Main Street.
The proposed new store has been designed by architects Smalley Marsey Rispin. The project team will submit a planning application to the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council shortly.
