A BOY aged 13 has been arrested after a school in North Yorkshire had to be evacuated as police searched the site following reports of a suspicious call.

All 1,050 students at Graham School in Scarborough had to be evacuated yesterday morning – including pupils who were due to sit GCSE examinations for French.

Police officers were yesterday questioning the teenager in connection with the incident, in which staff received an email stating a bomb would go off in the cafeteria.

North Yorkshire County Council confirmed yesterday afternoon that the school would reopen as normal today after police searches had found “nothing suspicious or of concern”.

But a spokeswoman said that pupils will have to report to the main hall and canteen area before moving to their classrooms for the remainder of the week.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed that officers were called at about 8am yesterday to Graham School following reports of a “suspicious call”.

Helen McEvoy, the headteacher at the school, stressed that the “safety of our students and our staff is paramount”, leading to the decision to evacuate the site.

Parents of students at the school had received a text yesterday morning to say that the site would have to be closed following the incident in which staff received an email to say a bomb would go off in the cafeteria. A spokesperson for the school wrote in a text to parents stating that the school was to be closed with “immediate effect”.

Arrangements were made for Year 11 exam students to take their GCSE exams at Scalby School in Scarborough.
