Deadline approachin­g for entry in ‘UK’s biggest tourism awards’

BUSINESSES AND leading attraction­s have spoken of the impact winning a major tourism accolade has had as the deadline looms for this year’s awards.

Final entries for Welcome to Yorkshire’s White Rose Awards, where the tourism organisati­ons from the region are honoured, must be submitted by tomorrow.

Businesses can enter one of the 17 categories, as well as the Outstandin­g Customer Service round.

Sir Gary Verity, the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing some exciting entries in this year’s White Rose Awards from new and establishe­d businesses.

“As always, we will be recognisin­g the very best of Yorkshire’s talent and celebratin­g the county’s thriving economy.

“White Rose are biggest tourism the UK’s awards and a great opportunit­y to put Yorkshire on the map.” Previous Winners have spoken about how the accolade has positively affected their business.

The Hare in Scawton won the Restaurant of the Year in both 2015 and last year.

Owner Liz Jackson said: “Having our food recognised by Welcome to Yorkshire is a really big deal as the competitio­n is steep.

“We’ve used the award on our website and all our social media, it’s definitely helped to raise our profile.

“And it’s a great night out whether you win or not, so my advice to businesses would be to just go for it.”

Sheffield’s National Emergency Museum has had thousands more visitors since achieving its Highly Commended status.

The museum’s director, Matt Wakefield, said: “We’ve been here for 30 years and we’ve never had so many visitors since the awards. So far, it’s looking like we’ll be up 10,000 visitors on last year.”

A date and venue have not yet been announced for the ceremony. Only Welcome to Yorkshire members are eligible for entry.
