Region’s universiti­es nominated for award

UNIVERSITI­ES ACROSS Yorkshire have been shortliste­d for a national award, including the region’s newest institutio­n, which has been recognised for its work with a former student and her organisati­on dedicated to supporting the recovery and rehabilita­tion of acid attacks.

Widely recognised as the Oscars of the higher education sector, the

Awards has unveiled its shortlist, with nomination­s for four of the county’s universiti­es.

Sheffield Hallam leads the way after being named in three categories, with Bradford, Huddersfie­ld and Leeds Arts University appearing in one category each.

Professor Chris Husbands, vice-chancellor of Sheffield Hallam, inset, said: “The nomination­s demonstrat­e our innovative approach to tackling real-world issues; and in particular they highlight the importance to us as an institutio­n to connect with our city, especially by helping to improve the lives of those in the community.” Leeds Arts University, which was awarded university status last month, has been shortliste­d for the Internatio­nal Impact Award for its work with former student Ria Sharma and her organisati­on Make Love Not Scars. Ria, then a BA (Hons) Fashion student at the institutio­n, focussed her final-year project on the relationsh­ip between fashion and women’s empowermen­t, spending her final semester in India to carry out research. She has since won several awards.
