Region’s universities nominated for award
UNIVERSITIES ACROSS Yorkshire have been shortlisted for a national award, including the region’s newest institution, which has been recognised for its work with a former student and her organisation dedicated to supporting the recovery and rehabilitation of acid attacks.
Widely recognised as the Oscars of the higher education sector, the
Awards has unveiled its shortlist, with nominations for four of the county’s universities.
Sheffield Hallam leads the way after being named in three categories, with Bradford, Huddersfield and Leeds Arts University appearing in one category each.
Professor Chris Husbands, vice-chancellor of Sheffield Hallam, inset, said: “The nominations demonstrate our innovative approach to tackling real-world issues; and in particular they highlight the importance to us as an institution to connect with our city, especially by helping to improve the lives of those in the community.” Leeds Arts University, which was awarded university status last month, has been shortlisted for the International Impact Award for its work with former student Ria Sharma and her organisation Make Love Not Scars. Ria, then a BA (Hons) Fashion student at the institution, focussed her final-year project on the relationship between fashion and women’s empowerment, spending her final semester in India to carry out research. She has since won several awards.
