Britain becomes ‘staycation nation’ for 2018

-

A SUMMER of ‘staycations’ has been predicted for 2018, with research finding rising numbers of people are set to stay in the UK instead of travelling abroad.

Almost three in five people will stay in the country for their summer break this year, the research by Travelodge has found, a figure up two per cent.

The study, based on surveys with 3,000 people across the country, also found that one in four are taking more short breaks, averaging three a year.

Shakila Ahmed, of Travelodge, said the UK had become a “staycation nation”, adding: “More Britons than ever are exploring what makes Great Britain so great.

“We are seeing more Britons booking three-in-one holidays. This includes taking a city, rural and coastal break as part of a one-week holiday.”

The Yorkshire Post detailed predictions for coastal communities for the summer ahead, as families shun foreign holidays in the face of a weak pound.

There are high hopes for a “huge boost” to the coastal economy as a result, tourism leaders and hoteliers had said, provided there is capacity and infrastructure in place around transport and hotels.

Now, the study from Travelodge shows, an estimated two thirds of people surveyed in York are set to have their annual holidays in the UK this year, with 47 per cent to go to the coast.

Collectively, the report highlights, British holidaymakers will boost the UK tourism economy by £30bn in 2018, a huge rise from the £7.2bn reported in 2011.

Cornwall and Devon remain the top two destinations for UK holidays this year, said the report, while the Lake District has lost its spot in third place to Edinburgh.
