Pot that... Presenter has dig at BBC schedule

-

IT HAS everything to do with potting, but not the sort Monty Don had in mind. The presenter of BBC Two’s

Gardeners’ World took a dig at the corporation for weeding out his programme from tomorrow’s schedule and planting in its place coverage of the World Snooker Championships from Sheffield.

It was particularly ironic, said Mr Don, given that this is National Gardening Week, an initiative of the Royal Horticultural Society, which runs until Sunday.

“Not sure what it tells us,” he tweeted, adding a pithy but unprintable comment.

He had previously retweeted a post from a viewer that read: “Doesn’t it seem ironic that on National Gardening Week,

Gardeners’ World is cancelled for ... snooker.”

The programme is a staple of Friday evenings on BBC Two, having celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

Mr Don has been its main presenter since 2011, following an earlier spell from 2003 until 2008.

A BBC spokesman attempted to rake over the rough patch.

“Gardeners’ World is a key part of the BBC Two schedule and wherever possible we try to minimise disruption to our output,” he said. “But our commitment to live sport, which is also enjoyed by the BBC Two audience, does sometimes mean that programming is subject to change.”

The snooker climaxes, as is traditional, on Bank Holiday Monday, a day on the green that chalks up one of the channel’s biggest audiences of the year.
