Runners rise to challenge in searing heat at Leeds 10K

-

THOUSANDS OF runners braved scorching temperatures as the Leeds 10k took place amid a carnival atmosphere.

Elite athletes rubbed shoulders with charity funrunners for the event which has become a highlight of the region’s running calendar since it began in 2007 and is famed for its fun and friendly atmosphere.

The event is part of the legacy of Jane Tomlinson, from Leeds, who raised £1.85m for charity by completing a series of athletic challenges despite suffering from terminal cancer.

John Hobbs, of Valley Striders Athletics Club, won the men’s race in a time of 32 minutes and 32 seconds. The first woman to complete the course was Becky McDonald, of City of Hull Athletics Club, in 39 minutes and 21 seconds.

Race organisers and volunteers ensured there were plenty of opportunities for runners to take water on board during the race. Sprinklers along the route and a sponge station also provided respite from soaring temperatures, which reached 21C when the race was staged yesterday morning.

The Run For All races are now staged in towns and cities including York, Sheffield and Hull.
