Ex-Minister joins fight to save city aquarium

-

THE FIGHT to save Hull aquarium The Deep has had backing from former Energy Secretary Sir Ed Davey.

Opponents of plans for a cruise terminal – whose cost has risen to £65m – say it puts the attraction’s long term future under threat.

The plans envisage cruise ships docking off Sammy’s Point, next to The Deep – which breeds some of the rarest species in the world, including the green sawfish and the Mexican walking fish.

Aquariums around the world have written to the council to raise concerns about the impact on the animals – including its popular gentoo penguins.

Among the concerns is noise from engines and loud PA announcements, that could startle and stress the birds, potentially affecting their breeding patterns.

The Lib Dems want alternative locations to be considered – including Albert Dock in west Hull.

The plans have also angered many residents on Victoria Dock estate.

Sir Ed, who was given a tour of The Deep during a visit, said: “The Deep is Hull’s number one tourist attraction and it is clear how much it is valued by the residents of the city.

“I can understand why the local Lib Dem team are doing all they can to support the Deep in the efforts to protect its future.”

The council has said the project is supported by many other Yorkshire councils and is “crucial” to Hull’s City Plan and the future development of the city centre.
