May Day misery two weeks on from Easter sun splash

OH DREARY ME: BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND REVERTS TO TYPE

-

By next weekend the indications are it will turn a bit more settled.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill.

TWO weeks on from the warmest Easter on record, hail, near gale-force winds and plunging temperatures greeted those who ventured out on Yorkshire’s coast over the weekend.

Angry seas whipped up huge waves and spray on Saturday, battering onlookers on Scarborough’s South Bay.

And, although yesterday was calmer, it is going to stay unsettled throughout the week, the Met Office says, with temperatures remaining on the cool side.

This afternoon outbreaks of showery rain are likely, with temperatures a disappointing 10C or 11C.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “The Easter weekend was remarkably warm and sunny and the early Bank Holiday Monday last year was hot and sunny. This was quite a contrast.”

The dreary theme weatherwise looks set to continue for the next few days, with Mr Burkill warning: “Tuesday again is going to be quite cloudy, and Wednesday has the potential for more persistent rain, and it will turn breezier too.

“By next weekend the indications are that it will turn a little bit more settled. We are likely to see things turn drier and brighter from the West.

“Probably for Yorkshire there’s a chance for heavy, even thundery showers, even on Saturday. Perhaps by Sunday we are going to see drier weather spreading.

“Temperatures will be slowly recovering through the week, but still a little bit below average. It will be the end of the week when they are closer to normal.”

The RAC is expecting it to continue to be busy on the roads today, with 3.1 million leisure car journeys being made on the bank holiday – up 1.2 million on 2018.
