Driver held after two die in M1 collision

-

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after two motorists died in a collision.

Emergency services were called to reports of a three-vehicle crash near the M1’s Tinsley Viaduct in Sheffield at around 8.15am yesterday.

South Yorkshire Police said that a lorry, van and car were involved in the collision, which occurred on the northbound carriageway.

The accident caused huge tailbacks and the motorway was closed in both directions for most of the day. The Southbound carriageway reopened yesterday afternoon.

The force said that two men died at the scene and a 39-yearold man from Hull was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He remained in custody last night.

The road was closed last night in order for investigations to take place.

A force spokesman added that the families of both men had been informed of the incident, and urged the public to refrain from “posting speculation or potentially distressing content about the collision online”.

Police said they wanted to hear from witnesses, especially any motorists with dashcam footage.

Anyone with information should contact the police on 101 quoting incident number 196 of June 7. Highways England said that due to the “complex nature of the ongoing police investigation”, the M1 North was closed until 6pm. Highways England announced just before 10.30am that they were beginning “rearward relief ” of trapped traffic.

There were reports of delays in and around Sheffield because of traffic being diverted from the M1 and the A1 was said to be very busy in both directions.
