UK’s top seaside destinations revealed in Which? report

-

ROBIN HOOD’S Bay was ranked the best seaside destination in Yorkshire, in a new report by consumer group Which?

It was listed number 13 in a national poll of nearly 3,000 holidaymakers.

Thousands of tourists rated their most recent visits to the seaside in a range of categories including quality of the beach, seafront, food, scenery, attractions and value for money.

The poll indicated that Bamburgh, in Northumberland, was the country’s most highly rated resort.

But Robin Hood’s Bay triumphed over better known and pricier locations, earning a customer score of 78 per cent due to the quality of its beach, seafront, food and value for money.

The report said of Robin Hood’s Bay: “This small Yorkshire village is a classic collection of old fishing cottages and cobbled lanes. In the late 18th century it was a hotbed of smugglers and swashbucklers, but now tourism is its main industry, which is evident in summer if you don’t arrive early enough to nab a prized parking spot.

“You can find out more about the town’s seafaring past at the visitors’ centre in the Old Coastguard Station down by the harbour. When the tide is out, hunting for fossils on the shoreline is a lot of fun. But be aware that the steep walk back up to town can be very tiring.”

Whitby came in at 24th on the list with a 76 per cent customer score, with Saltburnby-the-Sea in 31st position. Filey was 45th and Scarborough 48th.

Bridlington was ranked in 88th position, with a 56 per cent customer satisfaction score.

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel magazine, said: “The Yorkshire coast did incredibly well in the national poll. These ratings won’t make happy reading for some of those destinations many of us remember from childhood breaks of times gone by, which may have failed to keep pace with trendier destinations or those offering a better overall experience for our hard-earned cash.”
