Climate demo as leaders face quiz

-

EXTINCTION REBELLION activists last night staged a demonstration outside the BBC’s Question Time Leaders Special at the University of Sheffield.

As Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn, Jo Swinson and Nicola Sturgeon prepared to take questions from the audience, the protesters marched, sang and held banners.

An Extinction Rebellion spokesman said the group was demanding political leaders commit to telling the truth about the scale of the climate crisis, acting to decarbonise by 2025 and forming a citizens’ assembly. The spokesman said: “Life on Earth is in crisis and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making.”

Campaigner Nathan Strathdee, 19, said: “In Yorkshire, we will be walking to the polling booths through recently flooded streets and under hills that burned all summer.

“We are asking members of the electorate to consider their future, the future of their children and to cast their vote for the planet.”
