Pottery of ‘international quality’ at fair celebrating the craft of clay
CERAMICS CREATED by some of the country’s leading potters go on show this weekend in York.
The North York Ceramics Fair, which is being held at The Hospitium in York’s Museum Gardens, features contemporary studio ceramics from the UK and beyond, selected by the Craft Potters Association.
Organiser Toby Brundin said they had been oversubscribed three to one and had potters travelling from as far as the Isle of Skye and Cornwall because they were confident of the reception they would get.
He said: ‘We’re really looking forward to this year’s Ceramic Fair. We kicked off last year not really knowing what reception we would receive, but lots of visitors came and were all really receptive.
“This year we have had three applications for every space in the event and have worked hard to select fabulous work – the quality of the work this year is
of a national, even international importance.
“All the makers we have selected have dedicated their lives to the craft of clay, many making sacrifices, and their ceramics represent years and years of dedication.”
Featuring in this year’s show is Anna Lambert, who has a studio in North Yorkshire. She will be showcasing a large group of new ceramics based on drawings of Norwegian forests, which she made during a residency in Oslo last year.
Paul Young, who is based in Nuneaton, produces a range of domestic and decorative earthenware, drawing inspiration from early Staffordshire ware – but with a contemporary twist.
Running alongside the fair is a discovery programme all about ceramics in collaboration with the Centre of Ceramic Art, including live demonstrations and talks by the makers.
