Papers from frozen Thames fair to be sold at an auction

-

SALE: Frost fair keepsakes printed on presses set up on the frozen River Thames are to be auctioned.

Two sheets of paper printed in 1740 and containing children’s names are expected to fetch £1,500 each next week.

The Thames froze over in the 17th and 18th centuries. Fairs on the ice featured horse races, ox roasts, and merry-go-rounds, while presses printed souvenirs with customers’ names.
