Junior doctor exhausted on duty lifts lid on NHS staffing crisis in Yorkshire ahead of general election – David Smith

James Joseph. There isn’t a lid to lift - anyone with eyes and half a brain already knows this is how it is because doctors and nurses have literally been saying the same thing for years.

Doreen Magaw. As a ward clerk working on two massive medical wards in the 60s, I remember in winter we would have as many as eight extra beds on the ward in corridors etc - staff run off their feet. My friend was a junior nurse and remembers being on her own in charge of a ward at night. Doctors were exhausted! So nothing has changed – the NHS is not sustainable and patient demand is increasing.

Andy Beck. Of course the NHS is sustainable, if we choose a government which chooses to sustain it. We spend on health a fraction of what other comparable countries spend.

Pauline Finn. Bring back what we used to call the ‘orderlies’ – they did the changing of beds and such to leave the nurses to do the nursing.

Bernard Goddard. There are also many private hospitals in this country which are used by folk on private healthcare. I’m thinking of Bupa and Nuffield. What will happen when Jeremy Corbyn shuts these because he hates rich people who can afford to pay?

Catherine Boak. Lorry drivers are limited on the hours they can drive safely and this law should apply to all health workers.

Jacqui Martin. Well said Dr Smith - it’s long been the case that staff come way down the list of resources that need extra care to retain.

Emma Rock. It’s pure numbers. Mass immigration has caused such a disparity between supply and demand. The patient to staff ratio is so unbalanced that staff can’t properly care for one patient as they are rushing so much. That’s why many go to Australia.

Rebecca Hammond. As an NHS worker, I can assure you that this is nonsense. Immigrants contribute more to the UK economy, in taxes, than they use. Secondly, a heck of a lot of nurses, doctors, cleaners, and other people essential to running a hospital are immigrants. Without immigrants, the NHS would be stuffed.
