Test cuts number of Down’s babies
HEALTH: The number of babies born with Down’s syndrome has dropped by a third in hospitals that have introduced a test.
Non-invasive prenatal testing allows parents to choose to abort a Down’s syndrome foetus at an early stage, leading to a drop from one in 956 births in 2013 to one in 1,368 in 2017.
However, campaigners say it forces families to decide under pressure based on stereotypes of children with the condition.
