Christmas Day ‘to be brighter’ as rain clears

-

The River Severn in Worcester has burst its banks after heavy rainfall, but the weather in Yorkshire is due to improve, according to forecasters.

HEAVY RAIN today will clear for a drier weekend and a brighter Christmas Day in Yorkshire, experts forecast, but other parts of the country may not be so lucky.

There will be no let up to the wind and rain pounding parts of the UK in the run up to Christmas as a low pressure system sweeps across the country.

The heavy weather seen in Northern Ireland, south-west England and Wales is set to continue over one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

But although much of Yorkshire will endure heavy rain today, there may be gentle breezes tomorrow and Sunday, with Christmas Day having sunny intervals.

The Met Office has warned drivers to beware of flash flooding and standing water in the South West with between 2.5in and 3.5in of rain falling before the end of the week.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds stretching from south western Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the west coast of England and Wales was in place yesterday.

In the South, experts warned of heavy rain in Cornwall. In Worcester, the River Severn burst its banks.

Although the weather has been mild, Met Office chief meteorologist Paul Gunderson thinks we could see a cold snap.

“At the moment there are signs for a drier, quieter spell of weather just in time for the Christmas period, with the potential for colder temperatures making things feel a little more festive,” he said.
