Burghley Horse Trials fall victim to virus cancellation
FOR THE first time in its history, the five star Burghley Horse Trials has been cancelled.
Organisers had held back the release of tickets twice in the hope the three-day event, which runs in September, may still go ahead. But in a statement they said they must “act responsibly”, saying their absolute priority was the health and safety of the Burghley community.
The flagship event, which has been running since 1961, takes place in the spectacular surroundings of Burghley House and also features the final of the Burghley Young Event Horse series. It has enjoyed longrunning headline sponsorship from Land Rover.
Sir Richard Jewson, chairman of the Burghley Horse Trials Committee, said: “One of the joys of being involved with Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is to be continually reminded how much this iconic event is loved by the many who create, take part and attend.
“We are so appreciative of the support and co-operation that we have received at this difficult time; not least from our title sponsor Land Rover. We wish everyone well in these uncertain times.”
Sir Richard said the focus would now be on the 2021 event which he said they were all sure would be “a special celebration”.
Burghley is the final five star event in the eventing calendar and part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing, along with Badminton Horse Trials and the US Kentucky Three Day Event. Riders must consecutively win all three events to take the Grand Slam.
Last year’s Burghley Horse Trials winner, Pippa Funnell, is one of only two riders to take the Grand Slam title which she won in 2003.
Yorkshire-born Oliver Townend, came close to the Grand Slam in 2009, winning both Badminton and Burghley. He repeated his Burghley win in 2017.
