Town’s mayor’s parade will take place online – for the first time
THE MAYOR’S parade in Barnsley is to take place online for the first time, with residents being urged to embrace the spirit of the event from their own homes next month.
The parade usually draws crowds of thousands to the town centre, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it will take place via the internet as part of Barnsley’s Big Weekend Online.
Barnsley Council is now asking residents to make their own parade entries for the event on July 11.
Families can design their own mini-float covering the theme of “our wonderful town of Barnsley”.
Prizes will be also available, with the Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Pauline Markham, judging each entry.
Coun Markham said: “The Mayor’s Parade is always about celebrating the best of Barnsley
PAULINE MARKHAM: and we want this year to be no different as we move online.
“At this challenging time, this is a brilliant way for everyone to show their creativity at home, and I can’t wait to see this year’s online entries.”
Video entries should be up to 20 seconds long and are welcome from families, households, groups, charities, schools, businesses or organisations from across the borough.
Further information is available on the council’s website.
The news comes after it was announced Harrogate’s mayor will remain in the role for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Coun Stuart Martin was due to handover the title to Coun Trevor Chapman.
But Harrogate Borough Council said there would be no change for now because of the coronavirus crisis.
It comes after Coun Martin’s wife and mayoress, April Martin, thanked hospital teams for saving her life after she was taken into intensive care with coronavirus in March.
Coun Martin said he was “absolutely delighted” to continue, but added he was disappointed for Coun Chapman and his partner.
