Welcome back to Whitby – but take care

-

From: Coun Linda Wild, Town Mayor of Whitby.

FROM July 4, with the Government’s easing of restrictions, people can travel and stay overnight away from home.

This is great news for our hospitality businesses: the hotels, guest houses, pubs and restaurants, which are the heart of our tourist industry in Whitby.

Already, Whitby has welcomed large volumes of visitors and we are expecting even more. We look forward to regaining some normality with the help of people enjoying a 2020 ‘‘staycation’’.

Unfortunately, some are not behaving responsibly. This has made national headlines in Bournemouth, but it seems to be happening in destinations all over the country, including Whitby.

When some people urinate in public view despite the toilets being open; when there’s disorder and mess and rubbish discarded without a care, it causes worry and distress to residents, to careful visitors and to the authorities.

Also, obviously, it causes a dangerous situation regarding spreading the Covid-19 virus.

Scarborough Borough Council has taken a lead in making our streets ‘‘Covid secure’’, with signs, one-way pedestrian flows, hand sanitiser and public advice. We all need to follow that advice and take care of each other.

We welcome visitors to Whitby and want you to enjoy our beautiful town and keep safe. Please maintain social distancing hand hygiene. Enjoy yourselves in the knowledge we are keeping each other safe.

Whitby is a unique and beautiful place to visit we want everyone to have the best experience and enjoy their stay.

ALL the people rushing to get holidays in Europe may be jumping the gun. With marches, street parties and rushing to the coast, none of them sticking to the safe distancing rules, there will be a resurgence of the virus.

What is it with the Brits? They don’t think rules apply to them. The majority of the public were doing what was asked of them by staying home to help stop the virus spreading and take some pressure off the fantastic NHS workers.

Most of these people that are causing the problems are the younger generation which obviously has never been taught right from wrong, manners and respect. Please try to understand that the emergency workers owe you nothing, they are doing a job that is to help the public and the day will come when you need their help.

From: Ian Richardson, Railway Street, Beverley.

AS the virus crisis unfolds, it is becoming increasingly clear that this disease does not just kill or weaken its many victims, but also brutally exposes a whole panoply of weaknesses in the way our society functions.

It has also made myself realise that the great British public is not so great after all. The piles of rubbish and human excrement I witnessed on a beautiful Yorkshire beach last week cannot be blamed on the virus, the EU, nor even Boris Johnson – it is down to the shameful lack of communal values which we urgently need to rebuild, along with our economy, postpandemic.

PE and any school sport plus woeful diets as indicated by your separate piece featuring Prue Leith. As a volunteer junior coach of over 20 years, I have seen the deterioration in kids – and parents – close up.
