A CONSULTATION has begun into proposal for a new primary school to serve an area of a North Yorkshire town where new homes are being built.

North Yorkshire County Council is proposing to build a new mainstream primary school for 210 children aged four to 11, which will serve the North Northallerton Development Area.

The school would have potential to expand if necessary, providing places for up to 420 pupils.

Work has already begun on the development area, which runs between Stokesley Road and Darlington Road. It is expected to eventually contain 859 homes, with approximately 120 homes a year being built.

The area has also been identified for further development over the coming years, with many more homes expected to be built.

Coun Patrick Mulligan, executive member for skills and education, said: “The need for a new school site on the North Northallerton development was identified early in the stages of planning the development.

“We know that existing schools surrounding the development will not have the capacity to provide places for the number of families expected to be moving into the town over the coming years and a new school will be needed.

“We are inviting people to give their views on whether the proposed size and age range of the new school is suitable and the proposed admission criteria for the school, which will be based on proximity to the new school.”

An opening date has been provisionallysetforSeptember2022, with the consultation phase running until 5pm on October 23.
