Boss Weaver urges his players to follow Bamford’s example

- LEAGUE TWO STUART RAYNER Harrogate Town LWWWWL; Stevenage LLLDLL G Salisbury ( Lancashire) First meeting.

SIMON WEAVER has told his Harrogate Town players to learn from the cool finishing of Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford, but does not want to damage confidence after their fourmatch winning streak ended at the weekend.

Town welcome Stevenage tonight looking to respond to their 2- 1 League Two defeat at Colchester United.

“We dominated proceedings however you’ve got to hand it to them ( Colchester) on Saturday – they had 11 shots and had seven on target as opposed to our five from 21,” commented manager Weaver. “We need to do better in and around the box, and we even mentioned examples of right at the top of the game with Leeds the other day ( at Aston Villa) – how many touches did ( Patrick) Bamford need for his third goal? You don’t always have to swipe at it first time.”

Midfielder George Thomson was critical of his own finishing on Saturday, but Weaver does not want his players to beat themselves up too much.

“It’s good when lads face up to their responsibilities,” said Weaver. “He had a couple of chances, yes, but other people did as well.

“Tommo’s emerged as one of our best players, constantly wanting the ball and making us tick at the minute, so it’s probably being a little bit harsh.

“It’s up to us to get the balance right because the last thing the lads deserve is to have their confidence undermined by us. The players should rightly be confident that we can grab hold of games and be looking upwards.”

The November 24 game at Mansfield Town will now kick off at 7pm.
